Question:

Mercury boat motor throttle issue......?

Stupid question.... We have a 98' 50HP Merc Force. We are pretty sure that the throttle cable is broke because it will throttle forward, but not down. Reverse works fine.

How mush is this to fix.....ball park? And how hard is this to work on? This is our first real boat and we are unsure of what to do. Any tips or advice will be great. Thank you.

  1. You do have a broken cable, this control is a push/pull,push to throttle up pull to throttle down.

  2. The throttle cable for fast is same for slow. It you can speed up but not down I think you have another problem.

The cable itself isn't that hard to change. Harder to run through hull openings than hook up. Just disconnect ( Be sure it is throttle and not shift. Then disconnect from shift box at console. Take the cable to dealer and get one like it.

The cost shouldn't be bad if cable is what is wrong. Less than 30 bucks I would say
