  4. Mercutio's a man of sharp wit, but he's also wildly imaginative, passionate, moody and changeable. Shakespeare gave him the name Mercutio to indicate his mercury -like speed and edgy temperament.

    His wit overcomes his kindness and common sense more than once in the play, and gets him into fights and his imagination sometimes gets him wound up in his own emotions, as in the Queen Mab" speech he gives on the way to the Capulet's feast.
