okay so today i was trying to merge onto the highway, it was pretty busy so i was having a harder time merging in, finally the first opening comes, and im turning my wheel to move into the lane when all of the sudden the car behind me decides hes gonna try and go before me and blocks up my mirrors so that another car that i couldnt see at all tries to come into that lane in front of him so i had to jerk the wheel and go off the road. what went wrong here? isnt the car behind me supposed to wait until i go?

  1. are u one of those that trys to merge at 40 mph into 70 mph traffic...sometimes i do what that guy did...iv actually been behind people that stopped on the acceleration lane!!!!!

  2. You did not do anything wrong the person behind you sounds like he or she was in a very big hurry.....

  3. 1. Confidence in what you`re doing.

    2. same road speed as the other traffic.

    3. Confidence in what you`re doing.

    4. gentle manouvre into the traffic flow.

    5. Practise.

    6. Confidence in what you`re doing.

    7. less `panic` when a situation arises.

    8. Practise.

    9. Confidence in what you`re doing.

    10. and some-times it is slightly more an advantage to `speed-up` a little , to gain that opening.

good luck and , oh , did i mention confidence in what you`re doing?                  :>)

  4. It does not sound like anyone did anything wrong, you attempted to merge into traffic, the guy behind you didn't care and another guy must have need to exit ahead of you and you both went for the same gap at the same time.

At least one of you were paying attention and avoided an incident.

I have driven over 1,500,000 miles safely on our nations highways as a truck driver since the mid 90's and see the situation your describing daily.

The best thing to do when merging onto a highway to avoid this is put on your turn signal, and patiently wait for another motorist to slow down in let you in.

Most drivers assume that no one will let them in if they signal, including experienced drivers. This assumption is wrong, someone will slow down and let you in, mabe not the first or second or even third car, but believe me, if you are courteous and proceed forward in a non-aggressive manner with your signal on, you will be able to safely merge into traffic.

  5. you missed the most important part of merging with moving traffic. you are merging with them they are not merging with you. you have to give way and make sure the lane is clear.

  6. Most people are carrying out their own agenda while driving. Many don't consider their own or anyone else's safety. Many are distracted or are fatigued and not paying attention or might be on the cell phone.

We can't control what others do.

All we can do is try to be safe out there. There will always be bullies in life, whether in the playground, at work, or behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Yes, the car behind me should have waited until you merged, but this has happened to me too.

All you can do is find your gap, pick up your speed and fit in. If you get cut off from the rear, then hopefully the next person behind him/her will see this and let you in.........it takes TWO to merge.

  7. You did everything right, I'll bet the guy that cut you off was talking on his cell phone.
