what is Meritocracy in the UK and how does it effect children

  1. Is Meritocracy in the UK something specific?

    Anyway, a meritocracy is when a people reward the members of its society based wholly on its merits rather than class or money.

    Unfortunately in the UK it's less prevalent now that it was in the 60s/70s when there was more social mobility.  These days, while you're still able to get ahead if you work hard - you're likely to get further faster if you also "know someone" or have access to a lot of cash.

    How does it affect children? Well, only in their upbringing I'd imagine (ie what situation their parents are in).  They won't realise the challenges until after they've left school.
