Meriza Werenski captures Women’s 200m IM heats – 2011 YMCA Long Course Nationals
Meriza Werenski of Gr Holyoke-MA captured the top qualification spot into the final rounds by dominating the preliminary rounds of Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) meet, on second day of the 2011 Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Long Course Nationals
in Atlanta, Georgia.
Werenski displayed a phenomenal effort in the four-lap swim and won the top qualification spot in a time of 2 minutes and 20.75 seconds. Her time was nearly four second above the national mark of 2 minute and 16.33 seconds, set by Leah Gingrich of West Shore-PA
in 2008.
She was followed by Courtney Weaver of Gr. Flint-MI, who stayed nearly two seconds behind Werenski and occupied the second fastest qualification spot, with a timing of 2 minutes and 22.77 seconds. Megan Alexander of North Shore-MA was the third fastest swimmer
to qualify into the final rounds, as she sprinted her way to the wall in a time of 2 minutes and 22.88 seconds.
She was followed by Natalie Cronk of Piedmont-VA, who remained 0.35 seconds behind her preceding swimmer and entered the finals as fourth best swimmer in 2 minutes and 23.23 seconds. Meaghan Kwarcinski of Gr Holyoke-MA and Kelsey Buckley of Suncoast-FL occupied
the fifth and sixth qualification spots, with timings of 2:23.51 and 2:24.16 minutes, respectively. In the meantime, Kiera Molloy of Triangle Area-NC claimed the seventh finest spot to enter the final rounds, by reporting in a time of 2 minutes and 24.58 seconds.
She edged out her closest competitor, Shannon Ahearn of Wilton-CT, who produced a timing of 2 minutes and 24.60 seconds. Hannah Lips of Middle Tyger-SC secured the ninth fastest spot of the swim, as she clocked a time of 2 minutes and 24.68 seconds. Sam
Hardewig of Me Lyons-OH was the tenth qualifying swimmer, as touched the finishing wall and posted a time of 2 minutes and 25.09 seconds.
The session concluded with the commendable swims of all participants, while these swimmers will race each other in the final of 200m IM to secure a podium finish.
