Question:

Mermaid Costume Question?

by  |  earlier

It's nearing fall already! Augh! Anyways, I want to dress up as a mermaid for halloween. I was kind of planning on wearing a bikini top, but wouldn't that be too chilly? It's been rainy and cold lately. Any alternatives to a bikini top? Also, I'm not sure how to make the tail so that I can still walk around.

I'm not looking for a Little Mermaid costume. I'd like a no-brand one, like not a character one.

I'm fine with the hair and such, I'm blond and I can braid really well. I also have a lot of seashells to make a hairpin.

Any other suggestions? Thanks so much!

  1. Hi....While I will answer your above asked question, since you do not allow for e-mails, I just wanted to alert you to the fact that I found the Spell that you are looking for.  Please re-check my answer to your other question and you will find it.

In answer to this question:  I agree with the person who suggested wearing a nude-colored leotard and then adding mermaid touches (your own) to the costume.  Making your own costume is so much fun.  Once you really get into it, you'll have a blast and will realize just how creative you are.

  2. Here's a Mermaid Costume I found that has fabric connecting the bra to the skirt, but it's "skin" color so it looks like your stomach is showing.  That might help if it's cold out.

  3. I would suggest wearing a nude colored leotard under your bikini top such as this one (you'll need to scroll about half way down the page, its on the left):

For the tail, go with a skirt that has a tail shape trailing behind you such as the picture on this page (just scroll down a little bit).  The skirt here is for little kids, but you could use the idea and really easily make a no-sew wrap skirt with the hanging tail shape cut out from a piece of gauzy fabric.

  4. Well as I always say making your own is not out of the question. For the alternative for a bikini top you can wear a shimmery corset maybe with shear sleeves so u don't freeze to death. As for the fin I would say a skirt with fins on the back like a train might work. Good luck!
