  1. here are a few sites to check out - maybe they will give you some ideas you haven't thought about yet.

You could always decorate plain frames with small shells.  Or those paper mache boxes sold at the craft stores.

How about adding foam shapes to a pair of kids sun glasses.

Or decorating with fabric paint - plain beach towels. Or plain white visors.

    LITTLE MERMAID BIRTHDAY PARTY DECORATIONS

    Creating the Mood...

Welcome your guests to an under-the-sea adventure inspired by

Disney's classic Little Mermaid movie. You may want to watch the movie one more time to get your creative juices flowing.

Think... under the water, shades of blue, green and teal.

Suspend party streamers from the ceiling (vertically) as well as balloons to represent bubbles in the water. Cut streamers in varying lengths and shades of blue. Consider using "sticky-tak" to avoid making holes in your ceiling. Then add paper fish intermittently with the streamers.

Cover the party table with a light blue or white sheet.

Scatter shells, starfish and sequins all around the table.

Use the cake as a centerpiece.  Or, make a festive party centerpiece by attaching a bouquet of balloons to a Little Mermaid toy.

Use butcher paper or poster board to decorate the front door with an underwater scene. For added effect switch out some of your standard light bulbs to colored blue and/or green bulbs.

Variations: add blue cellophane, toile netting or shimmer fabric to the party area.

Time Saving Tip: Many of the ideas on this page require

pre-cut shapes. Most scrapbook or teacher stores will have die-cut shapes.

    OCEAN PARTY GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

We've provided several party games and crafts to coincide with this them. Select 2-3 games and one craft that are appropriate for your party space, budget and the age of the children. Include your birthday girl in the

    decision process id possible.

    Ariel's Treasure

Ariel is completely enchanted by all objects related to humans.

Can the children help her find them?

Before the party, hide simple household items around the party are or yard; forks, combs, spoons, bowls,  toothbrushes, stapler, hanger etc. the children will work together to find all of the items and then receive a sticker or small prize at the end.

    Crab Walk

This traditional gym class game is a perfect addition to this them.

The children will race walking like crabs ...

Walk sideways on all fours with their bellies up. If this is too difficult for your age group, the players can face downwards and walk sideways on all fours. Be sure to designate a start and finish line with an appropriate distance in between.

    Flotsam and Jetsam Tag

Two of the children will hold hands in the middle of a large playing area.

All other players are "mermaids" who must try to run past "Flotsam and Jetsam" to the other side of the playing area.  If a mermaid is tagged, he or she will trade places with either "Flotsam or Jetsam" and help tag more mermaids.

    Blowing Bubbles

For extra no-prep fun, take out some bubbles and have a contest for who can make the largest, most, smallest etc.

    Pin the Shell on Ariel

Play this just as you would Pin the tail on the donkey. Enlist an artistic teen to draw Ariel with a beaded necklace. Trace a shell in the center of the necklace. then make shell playing pieces with craft foam. Place sticky-tac on the backs of the shells. The children will attempt to place the shell in the correct location while being blindfolded. Down forget to gently turn

the player 1-3 times before their turn.

Kit's Tip: Young children may not like being blindfolded or spun...that's okay, they can simply close their eyes.

OCEAN PARTY ARTS AND CRAFTS IDEAS

It was so easy to come up with little mermaid party crafts that several are listed. Pick one or two appropriate activities for your party.

Sebastian Crab Craft or Place Holders

An easy to make craft for the party guests, or make these crabs before the party to use as place holders.

    You'll need:

    Red plastic bowls

Red and black craft foam or construction paper

    Red chenille stem (pipe cleaner)

    Plastic Eyes

    Glue dots or Craft Glue

    Find supplies here >>

    How We Made It:

Cut two strips of craft foam for each crab to make the arm

Cut two claws fro each crab

    Cut chenille stems in half

    Cut mouth piece

Using glue dots, attach the claws to the arms. Attach the arms to the rim of the bowl and place the bowl upside down. Poke two small holes into the bowl and insert the chenille stems for antennas (optional)

Use the glue dots to place the eyes and mouth.

    Variation

If you don't mind the mess, the children can paint white paper bowls with red tempera paint. The higher quality bowls such as Chinette, will work best. Place each bowl on the table as a place setting and maybe hide a bag of treats under the crab shell.

    Mermaid Puppet

Print this easy to make mermaid finger puppet pattern from Birthday In a Box. Add your own supplies for decorating. Printing the mermaid on card stock paper will make it stronger or glue the printed paper to construction paper.

    Paper Plate Fish

    You'll need:

Paper plates, construction paper, crayons or markers, glue sticks and scissors.

Color the plate blue ( or other bright color).

Cut the mouth out. Cut two triangles for fins and attach to the body with glue. Make paper eyes and attach with glue as well.

    Paper Plate Jelly Fish

    You'll need:

paper plates, strips of crepe paper or ribbons, glue stick, scissors, something to color with and construction paper.

Cut the paper plate into half-circles before the party.Let the children color the half circle (body). Depending on the children's ages you can precut black and white paper circles for the eyes.  If the children are old enough and you have enough scissors, they can cut their own.

Glue or staple strips of tissue/crepe/construction paper along the bottom. Glue the eyes and mouth onto the front of the jellyfish.

    PARTY FAVORS

Delight your guests with a small fish bowl (pet or craft store) that's been filled with gummy sharks and fish, Little mermaid stickers, fish squirt toy

    and bubbles.

Your guests will go home smiling when you give them a Little Mermaid favor

purse filled with matching goodies. Add a sweet treat or personalized sticker

to the favor kit, or leave it as it is.

    UNDER WATER RECIPES

    Shark Punch

This refreshing drink has a surprise “bite” lurking just beneath the surface! A day before the party, make shark ice cubes by freezing bite-sized gummy shark candy in ice cube trays filled with water. Let the trays stand at

room temperature for an hour to remove the air bubbles before placing them in the freezer. The candy will dissolve slightly while freezing, tinting the cubes a soft pastel color.

Then, prepare blue drink mix according to package instructions (Kool-Aid® works well). Pour the blue drink into a punch bowl and add 2 liters of ginger ale. When serving, place two or three shark cubes in a tall, clear glass for each child and fill with punch!

    Under the Sea Treat

Each guest will get to eat their own personal aquarium!

Pour blue jello into clear plastic cups and partially chill.  When the jello is slightly thickened add a Gummi shark, fish and a few pieces of fruit by the foot or fruit leather (seaweed). Continue to chill until firm.

Before serving, top with a wave shaped whipped cream swirl.

Have a great birthday party and remember to have fun!
