Mesa Mountain View boys volleyball team defeats Mesquite on Monday
Monday turned out well for the Mesa Mountain View boys volleyball team as they were able to secure themselves a win.
The victory that they were able to achieve came in the opening game of the Class 5A boys volleyball state tournament match.
The match was held at the home ground of Mountain View and the team that they were competing against was Mesquite. Playing with the added advantage of being in their home ground, Mountain View was able to hand out a defeat to Mesquite by making a clean sweep
over them.
Not only was Mountain View able to win the match by bagging three sets back to back, they did so in a commendable fashion. In the first two sets of the match, Mountain View was able to smoother Mesquite quite easily. It was only in the third set of the game
that Mesquite gave Mountain View some competition.
By the time the night was out and Mountain View had started celebrating their well deserved win while Mesquite was heading out of the courts with heads hung low, the scoreboard read 25-12, 25-18 and 25-21.
With their recent win, Mountain View has been able to tally a total number of 15 wins so far. These have been accomplished at the cost of incurring losses that amount to be three in all.
The first set of the match started with both Mountain View as well as Mesquite going in for the kill. During the initial stages of the match, both the teams were almost neck-to-neck with each other. However, as the match reached its middle, Mountain View
was able to take the lead and extend their advantage until 21-11.
After experiencing such a huge deficit, Mesquite could not fully recover and eventually gave the first set of the game away to Mountain View at 25-12.
Capitalizing on the momentum built in the first set of the match, Mountain View was able to come out strong in the second set as well. This time around however, Mesquite did not let their opponents move much far off; rather, they were able to take the lead
for themselves at 13-9.
Mountain View did not let the game slip away from them and evened the score at 14-14. Eventually, Mountain View was able to pull up ahead and bag the second set of the game at 25-18.
After having lost the first two sets of the game, Mesquite put in a valiant effort in the third. However, it was not enough to stop Mountain View from sealing the deal at 25-21.
When the match had ended, Coach Katie Higgins of Mountain View said, “Each round, especially for us, is a big match. Having a good match against a quality team like Mesquite hopefully will help us. I was impressed with the way we looked.”
