Mesmerizing exhibition match between Lee Chong Wei and Taufik Hidayat brings huge success
The first exhibition match between Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei and Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat brought tremendous success, as both shuttlers managed to collect RM 443,000 through the auction of their playing equipment for the earthquake and tsunami victims in
Japan. The match ended in favour of Chong Wei after a thrilling three-set fight at Juara Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 3 April.
Chong Wei, the World Number one shuttler in the category of the Men’s Singles, is willing to collect RM 1 million through exhibition matches in different cities of Malaysia. The exhibition match between Chong Wei and his friend Taufik entertained the crowd
with their quality play that they demonstrated. Both of them are considered the most celebrated and successful shuttlers in the world of Badminton.
The match started in a fascinating fashion, as both players kept the pace very high and played an attacking game together with the occasional smiles and unusual fancy strokes. The arena was packed to see the giants of the game. The first set remained very
tight until the end of the game, as Chong Wei managed to win with a tight margin of 22-20.
In the second game, both shuttlers remained close and reached 15-15, as Taufik took a three-point lead by playing a dominating game. The match was completely pressure free, as the objective of both parties was to collect money for the earthquake and tsunami
victims. The Indonesian won the second game with a narrow margin of 21-19.
The third and final game was again very tight, as both players worked well by proving their dynamic skills and expertise of the game. The score progressed with equal pace from both sides, as neither player made any errors in the game. At the ending moments
of the match, Chong Wei remained lucky to win the final set with a close margin of 22-20.
The Malaysian auctioned off all of the playing equipment including two racquets, two shirts and a pair of shoes, which he used in the final match of the All England Open Premier Super Series 2011. He received RM 284,000 for the two racquets, RM 50,000 for
two shirts and RM 24000 for shoes.
The two racquets used by Taufik and Chong Wei in the exhibition match generated RM 84,000. Apart from the money collected from the auction, the officials of the Badminton Association of Malaysia also contributed RM 15,000 in the “Hope and Smile” fund raising
campaign initiated by Chong Wei. The World Number one expressed his feeling after the successful completion of the match by saying that he is very happy and he also thanked his friend Taufik for his help in the fund raising project.
