http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296 continues to play with history books as he washes away Muller’s record of 85 goals in a single calendar year.
Sunday was a special day for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Argentina-c2841 and Lionel Messi, as it saw Barcelona’s diminutive forward break German legend Gerd Muller’s record of 40 years back.
1972 saw German and Bayern Munich great Gerd Muller score a massive tally of 85 goals in the calendar year and for 40 long years, the record held intact.
No player even came closer to scoring such an insurmountable number of goals and for the historians, the feat stayed put.
The Argentine forward has had a reputation of playing with history books since his bursting on to the main-stage of football, and amongst a scarce bunch of ancient records, remained Muller’s emphatic goal tally, safe and sound, yet definitely in danger from
a magician whose talents belongs to an alien planet.
As feared by the German, a memorable 2012 has seen the Barcelona man take on the sacred bunch of records left over in the history books; unfortunately the first record to be put to the hook was Gerd’s.
With free flowing scoring that includes a massive 21 braces and a jaw dropping figure of 9 hat-ricks, which also included a 5-goal haul against Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League, Messi managed to humble one of the most coveted records in the
history of the game.
The ceremonial moment occurred in Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Real Betis, with Messi again at the heart of scoring.
His first goal saw him equal the German’s tally of 85 and the air of excitement associating the Barcelona faithful was granted with a gift, when the Argentine magician smashed in a brilliant finish after a back-heel form Andres Iniesta.
To talk in Muller’s defence, the German managed the amazing tally of 85 in just 60 appearances; however it has taken Messi 66 games to achieve the same.
Muller’s feat led Bayern to league titles in 1971-1972 and 1972-1973, whereas Messi’s numbers hasn’t helped Barcelona win the league as yet.
Muller’s goals also went on to lead http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 to a European Championship victory whereas Messi’s goals haven’t been of real use to Argentina if weighed in terms of success that they have brought to the nation.
