Messi and Rooney have to perform internationally in order to be considered great, claims Pele
Brazilian legend, Pele is back in the news again, making more claims as to who is a great player and who isn’t. The Brazilian great has almost made it a hobby to voice his opinions about the quality of players, both old and new.
Widely considered as one of the greatest footballers of all time, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pele-c40189 is known for drawing attention towards himself, as he is used to making claims about modern footballers, the current generation of players.
As he is one of the greats of the game, many top players around the world are often compared to Pele, who finds it compulsory to voice his opinion about their greatness.
However, it is when one of the current top players in the world is compared to him that Pele reacts with a claim.
His most recent claim is pointed towards Manchester United’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296. In a recent press conference, Pele made it abundantly clear that in order to be called great, the players needed to perform on the international stage
as well.
Leonel Messi and Wayne Rooney are both considered top stars at their respective clubs. Both players, with a number of records to their respective names, are currently considered as two of the best in the world.
The players have been widely applauded for their performances by footballers, supporters, coaches, critics, experts and journalists.
However, Pele has expressed contrary statements about such claims. The Brazilian has emphasized the importance of performing on the world stage in the career of a footballer.
While talking to the Sun, Pele was quoted as saying:
“I think a 'great' player is defined by their performances at the World Cup. For example, watch Lionel Messi play for Barcelona. He is very good. Exceptional. But for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Argentina-c2841, he's completely different. Compare him to Zinedine Zidane. He won the World
Cup and was at the top for 15 years. He was a more complete player than Messi.”
Talking about Rooney, Pele added:
"I am a very big fan of Rooney. He always fights for the team. He is not too technical, his strength is his heart. He's a good player. But you can't really compare him to me. I scored a lot of goals. I don't know if Rooney has.”
