The Argentinean maestro picked up a knock on his left knee right when he was about to reach Gerd Muller’s record, but even after the injury he stated that he is not focusing on the record.
The Barcelona star, Lionel Messi, gave all the Catalan fans a scare as he went down holding his left knee during the game against Benfica.
La Blaugrana already topped their group prior to the last Champions League group game against Benfica, and Tito Vilanova decided to field an inexperienced team against the Portuguese giants, who had to win the game at the Nou Camp in order to reach the next
stage of the competition.

Many thought that the decision was only taken because the Argentinean star wanted to break Gerd Muller’s all-time goal scoring record in a single calendar year.
Messi was actually close to equalizing Muller’s record as he got past the Benfica shot-stopper, but picked up a knock on his left knee and just when he shot the ball, the Argentinean star fell to the floor holding his left knee.
While many thought that this might keep Messi out for a long time and he will not be able to break Muller’s record, luckily the Argentinean only picked up a knock and will be in action soon.
While speaking about the record, Messi claimed that he is not focusing on it, even though his colleagues are always speaking about it.
“As I always say, for me the record is not an obsession. I have heard my colleagues say that they will help me, and all the goals I get are with their help. I’m not preoccupied by it.”
“It would be great because I am close to it. Hopefully if I do it then it can last a long time like Muller’s has lasted, but it is not something I am focused on.”
“I might get to it, if not then nothing happens. But I am close, and we will try.”
Barcelona will be facing Real Betis over the weekend and the Argentinean star is expected to start the game for the league leaders.
