Mesut Ozil backs Real Madrid to improve for fans
Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil has said that he is confident the fans at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium will get behind their team when Real's performances improve.
Ozil, who starred for Germany at the World Cup this summer, joined Real from Werder Bremen in August. The attacking midfielder has made a promising start for Jose Mourinho's team, who are unbeaten so far
with ten points from four league games.
But despite the team's promising start, the Real fans, who value entertainment on the pitch as highly as results, have withheld their cheering at the team's home stadium.
“The Bernabeu will soon applaud our game," Ozil insisted, speaking to Spanish publication
AS. "We know we can improve and that we have a tough road ahead but we are a young team that can develop. We will be even stronger and the fans will enjoy it.”
The German, who lost the UEFA Cup Final and won the German Cup in 2009, added that no team can be expected to play stunning football in every game.
"Of course we want to give 100 per cent on the field, but we are humans, not robots. Sometimes things go better and sometimes things go worse. I am convinced that we are beginning to play better games."
Zidane a great influence
Ozil also spoke about Zinedine Zidane, the attacking midfield legend who spent five seasons with Real between 2001 and 2006.
“What I liked best about Zidane was his ability to control the ball with ease, and his threat in front of goal. He was the complete player, as cold as ice, and I admired him very much," said Ozil, who
especially remembers Zidane's goal in the 2002 Champions League final.
The Frenchman received a high cross from the left and, with practically no momentum on the ball, swung his left foot high in the air to send a great volley into the top corner.
“The final in Glasgow, with that goal against Leverkusen, that was a world class goal. I dreamt of scoring that goal."
