ok i have gotten surgery probably over a year or two ago in my arm and it now has a metal plate inside of it. It has a pretty big scar from the surgery on the arm too. But will i need a Doctor's note to get pass the metal detectors at the airport. Or will my scar be proof enough???

  1. It probably won't hurt to have a doctor's note, but anyone who sets off a metal detector is subject to further scrutiny. The TSA website states that you should inform the TSA about your metal plate, but it won't necessarily prevent further scrutiny. It's unfortuntate for people who have metal in their bodies, but terrorists can have metal in their bodies too.

  2. Most, if not all, 'plates from surgery are non-ferrous.  Titanium is usually used.  It should not set of any alarms.  If it does, offer to show them the scar.  That should do the trick.

  3. You can expect extra scrutiny, but should be OK once they check you out. It couldn't hurt to carry a written statement from your doctor, but it's not necessary.
