Metal Gear Solid 4 to get trophy support – Video Games Update
Hideo Kojima, the producer of Metal Gear Solid (MGS) games, has announced on his twitter that the fourth game in the series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, will finally be getting the long awaited trophy support patch.
MGS 4 was developed by Kojima Productions, which is an in-house studio owned by Konami and was released on June 12, 2008 exclusively for the Playstation 3. The game was the first MGS title on the current generation consoles and fans had been eagerly awaiting
it after the smashing success of the third game, MGS 3: Snake Eater, on the Playstation 2.
MGS 4 did not disappoint fans and critics as it managed to score many perfect 10s from many review sites and has managed to sell over 5.64 million units since launch making it the highest selling Metal Gear game ever. MGS 4 was the killer title the Playstation
3’s library desperately needed to compete with the popular exclusives present on the Xbox 360.
The major criticism about the game was the long cut-scenes. Fans complained that MGS 4 felt more like a movie rather than a game as game-play was interrupted constantly by pre-rendered cut-scenes in order to advance the story.
Another problem that the fans had with the game was the fact it had to install after each chapter. Back in 2008, developers were having difficulty programming for the Playstation 3 and most games had mandatory installs because of the slow read speed of the
Blu-ray drive. MGS 4 did not feature a full install, instead chose to install only the required chapter. Fans complained that this broke immersion as they had to wait for ten to twenty minutes before they could replay a previous chapter.
At that time the Playstation 3 did not have trophy support so the game shipped without them. Now, however, trophy support is mandatory of all developers for the Playstation 3 and hardcore fans of the series have been begging Konami to add them through an
update.
It seems that Konami is finally giving the gamers what they want as the new patch will not only add 34 trophies to the game but will also add the option of a one-time full game install so that fans don’t have to stare at loading screens for ten minutes after
each chapter. The patch arrives in August and is a part of the 25th Anniversary of the Metal Gear series.
