Hideo Kojima’s long running classic series manages to break the 30-million units sold mark and with a number of titles in the works that number can only go one way.
It has been nearly 25 years since the first Metal Gear Solid game was gifted by Hideo Kojima to the world and since then the critically acclaimed series has come a long, long way.
Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation One was a game changer in every sense of the word. It brought a new kind of gameplay, one that left gamers begging for more. Metal Gear Solid 2 and Snake Eater arrived on the PlayStation 2 console and quickly became the
console’s most prominent series.
In fact, the PlayStation 3’s sales really picked up when Metal Gear Solid 4 was released. The game not only won almost every game of the year award out there, but is currently the only true MGS game made for the current generation of gaming platforms.
The game’s protagonist, Snake, has become one of the icons of the gaming world, rivalling the likes of Master Chief from the Halo series and Nathan Drake of the Uncharted trilogy.
Apart from the core series a number of titles have already been released on the PlayStation Portable and recently on the Nintendo 3DS. It was on the occasion of the release of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D in the United Kingdom that the announcement was
made.
It was confirmed that the game sold an incredible 31-million units since it was released all those years ago.
Yet, with the number of HD remakes and collections having been released recently that number is surely going to go nowhere else but up as a new generation of gamers have something in common with their gaming parents.
At the same time, Metal Gear Rising, the series’ first foray onto the Xbox 360, is set for release this year and if the game lives up to the hype than few million, in terms of units sold can be expected.
It doesn’t end there as Kojima also hinted that he was looking to work on Metal Gear Solid 5, which many are speculating would release with the PlayStation 4.
