Metal Retainer vs Clear Retainer?

How long does it take to make a Metal Retainer and how long does it take to make a Clear Retainer.

I'm going to my orthodontist tommorow and they said im getting impressions for my retainer and then 3 weeks later im going to get it and get my braces removed. it doesn't make sense because i thought it takes a couple of hours to make a retainer. Please help me

also don't they need to remove your braces for impressions?
