  1. On a lathe?

Threading cuts a helical or spiral groove around a cylinder or cone.  The ends of a thread never meet.  A thread is cut by having a tool move axially along a rotating part, it is repeated deeper each time until the thread is cut.  The speed of the tool is set by having the lead s***w geared to the spindle so it can move the carriage when the halfnut is closed.

Grooving is cutting a circular groove with no ends.  A groove is cut by feeding a tool radially into a rotating part.
