Question:

Metal roofs in the southern USA?

I just returned home to the northern midwest after vacationing in the Virginias and N. Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. I was amazed to see so many metal roofs! I love the way they look, but only see them on VERY old homes up here in the north. What benefits do these metal roofs provide to homes in the south? Why are they so popular, even with new homes? Thanks in advance for any answers you may have!

  1. They last forever! Several of my uncles have a metal roof. One complained that his was high-maintenance--he has to paint it once every 25 years! It's been on the house for almost 80 years with no problem and will probably last forever if it gets painted once every 25 years.

A copper roof requires no maintenance, but is expensive initially.

Some people don't like the sound of rain on the metal roof. It is slightly louder than on a composition shingle roof. Sleet or hail can be noisy. But I love to visit their houses when it is raining. The sound of rain on their roof will put me to sleep very quickly.

  2. My sister  had  one  put on  her  home,  central  Texas,  we  have  several  hail storms  a  year.  They amy  dent  but  dont  bust  off like  shingels  do.   Then  she put in attic  fan to help  with  attic  heat.

  3. Most people like the way they look, sound, etc.  According to the type you get, I think you can also get a break on your income tax for an energy efficient addition to your home.  My father-in-law had us put one on his house, his shingles were always burning up here in SC.

  4. They are cheaper than shingles and reflect the light and therefore reduces your air conditioning bills in the summer.
