Metal sides on a snowboard box?

I'm planning on building myself a snowboard box, I was planning on using something like lexan. At the snowpark I usually go to, there's this box I really like and it has a 90 degree bent metal plate on each side of the box that ends flush with the top of the box. Would it still do the same if I would lay the lexan on top without the metal sides?

yes it will be the same thing but less forgiving if you catch an edge on the side while nosesliding or boardsliding. if you have sharp edges they could dig into the lexan.
