Metal thing wrapped around my USB cable

My digital camera has a plastic thing that the USB cable wraps around a few times. It has little half circles of heavy iron inside. What is it, I want to take it off because it's getting in the way (it just clips right off)

That metal thing on your usb cable is called a Ferrite Bead, Its used to limit interference between electronic equipment.

Can you remove it, Sure you can. If you notice error's or slow transfer speeds than you might want to put it back on.
