Question:

Metals safe for birds?

I know some metals are toxic to birds. I want to make a bird toy using beads and craft wire. I'm basically replicating a toy I saw in the store. Is craft wire toxic? It says Fibre Craft on the package. It's stem wire... guess it's used for decorating with flowers. Don't know. Please help if you know about this. Thanks

  1. Yes, copper and zinc are especially toxic to birds.  If you want to be safe, get your supplies at a bird store. Zinc is used on some metals and wires to keep them from rust but is very toxic to birds.  Tin, steel and iron than have been sprayed with antirust paint are ok. Best thing to use is stainless steel or plastic. You can get these at a home improvement store like Lowes or Home Depot and they come in all colors too which may be more enticing to a bird. The stem wire might be a problem as the birds will undoubtedly pick off the covering and that may be a problem too.

  2. i dont know! i dont think it would hurt but like u said, some of the wires(metals) can be toxic for birds so if i were u i wouldnt take a risk. i think u should stick to buying toys that are made specially for pets(birds) because they know wat to use and wat not to.

  3. im not sure i doubt it alot try it and see what happends if he starts seeming diffrent then take it out immedietly

  4. No craft wire isn't safe.

The only safe metal is stainless steal. If it isn't stainless steal you should never use it as all other metals are toxic.

  5. I doubt it's unsafe.

Go ahead.. worst case.. fewer chirps..

  6. I don't know if it has any Lead, Zinc or Aluminum or ... in it. I know Steal is safe. An idea is to pick some of her old toys that has wire and disassemble it and reuse it if you can.
