When will the next meteor shower be visible, by the naked eye, from somewhere in the southern Illinois region, and how many per hour will there be? Thanks a lot!!

  1. Now, at night time.  Maybe one meteor per minute.  


  2. Right now! The Perseid meteor shower will peak on the morning of August 12th, at about 1 or 2 am. They are visible naked eye. The Perseids are famous for their "meteor storms" in the past with very high hourly rates (thousands per hour). However, this year there will not be such a "meteor storm" yet still have relatively high hourly rates, with at least 1 per minute.

    For best results, you might want to get away from light pollution and check a weather forecast beforehand. I don't know precisely where in southern Illinois you are, but here is the "Clear Sky Chart" for an observatory in the area that shows cloud cover, temperature, etc:
