I want to major in meteorolog in college and I read online that I should take dynamics and synoptics. What are those classes like in high school? Basically, what do I learn in those classes and how will it help me in meteorology?

  1. I don't know what they're like in high school because I've only taken them in college. I haven't taken any dynamic meteorology classes yet, but I've finished my synoptic meteorology classes. They're not difficult as long as you do what you're supposed to do. Synoptic meteorology is the study of large-scale weather patterns plus it has forecasting involved. Dynamic meteorology is more of a physics standpoint. Both types of classes are very important for understanding the atmosphere and the associated weather patterns. Besides your typical atmospheric based classes, be sure to take plenty of math and science classes. Math, physics, and other topics are very important in meteorology.

Best of luck in your study of meteorology. Always know that meteorology is a very rewarding career for all of those who pursue it.

  2. Good for you.  If I was starting a new career and going to school, I'd definitely go for Meteorology.  I've always been a weather geek.

  3. first of all...what a great major to pick!

but...i don't think your high school would have dynamics and synoptic...at least mine didn't. you will not take those until college.

a lot of math and science is needed. i would try taking classes like precalc and calculus. physics is also a very good class to take. start reading up on so meteorology books too...you will be very prepared!

    hopefully i helped...meteorology is fun!
