Question:

Metformin-how long does it work?

I take Siofor 850 (metformin) for my high levels of insulin. My doctors says I should take it twice a day, with meals, except for morning (breakfast). Do you know for how long lasts the effect of metformin in the body, so I take it as correct as it could be? Thanks

Metformin is the first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes. Metformin does not stimulate insulin release from the beta cells, and so it does not cause hypoglycemia. In fact, in people taking metformin alone, the glucose levels and the insulin levels are both lower. Metformin also reduces appetite and promotes weight loss, and it has a beneficial effect on some risk factors for heart disease such as lowering triglycerides. Metformin treatment in obese individuals was found to be more effective than insulin or sulfonylureas in reducing heart attacks

  2. Metformin takes a while to begin working and then is stored up in your system. It can take 4-6 weeks to become effective and just as long to get out of your system. Take it as directed by your doctor, a morning and evening dose is the norm.

  3. Metformin, in the basic preparation, is a twice daily medication.  There are time-release preparations that can be taken once a day, but most usually it's prescribed as you have described your doctor prescribing it for you.

  4. Take it like your doctor prescribed.

  5. the peak hour: 1-3 hours. the half life: 6.2-17.6 hours
