  1. Meth is a nation wide problem, and you will find it on all the Hawaiian Islands. However, finding a safe apartment is rather easy. Get in touch with a local realtor and they will be able to veer you in the right direction. Honolulu is quite expensive, have you checked the Big Island.  Hopefully you have a job lined up there it can be quite difficult if you are haole.  Also check apartments.com.

  2. The statistic you're quoting comes from a study that found 40% of males arrested in Honolulu during the study period in 2003 tested positive for meth.

It's bad. And it's not concentrated in certain neighborhoods or socioeconomic groups the way, say, the crack epidemic of the 80s was. It rips families apart. One reason it's worse in Hawaii is that it has been going on here since the 90s at least, while the feds would only fund the fight against marijuana. Another reason is that the family ties here are so strong an extended family will turn itself inside out trying to help their son or their nephew. The concept of "enabling" is a bit foreign to them. We've got quite a few kids in school who were exposed to meth in the womb, and I wonder some days just what we'll ever be able to do for them.

The good news, if there's any, is that the meth labs actually tend to be somewhere else--LA, Mexico. Not much actual manufacturing going on here in the islands. I've got plenty of other reasons not to move to Honolulu--most of them financial--but the risk of living next door to a meth lab isn't one of them.

  3. In Oahu it is a major problem. I work at one of the major hospitals there and the amount of addicts we see is overwhelming. If you are looking to start a family out there, I would suggest doing your homework. Your question about finding an apartment needs research as well. There is a huge amount of homeless people in Honolulu but if you try the Kahana area or maybe Portlock which is close to the city but further away from the crime you may find some good places. I live in Maui and commute to work. Hope this helps.Aloha

You can't really pin meth use down to a specific neighborhood, since one end of Honolulu to the other is only an hour drive.

There are plenty of safe apartments here, thousands in fact. Studios start at $1000, 1-BR at $1200, 2-BR at $1600.

  5. There is a lot of meth use on the island; I work at a hospital & we see it all the time.  Not many meth labs though.

  6. The scope of the problem in Puna, HI is unbelievable. Total meth-induced anarchy and the feds just want to fly around stealing people's pot plants.
