Are you treating natural waste, like food scraps and lawn trimmings? Compost it.

Are you naturally treating household/ human waste? A septic system with a "green field". This is a kind of a mini wetland on your property where the moss, cat-tails and mushrooms do the dirty work.

Also you can look into "grey-water" systems. These divert runoff from sinks and showers, through a course filter, and then use it to flush toilets. There's more to it, but that's the idea.

There are quite a few good books on the subject. The "Toilet Papers" , Septic tank design and operation, using reedbeds etc.

Interesting to note from personal experience, that older concrete septic tanks seem to last longer, with fewer problems than modern "flask" types. Given the choice, I would build one from poured concrete using wooden formers, then direct the outflow into 2 reedbeds - selectable so they can be easily dug out, and from them into a drainage field of porous pipe.

On a smaller scale, composting toilets are commercially available - get the brouchures if you want.

Most liquid wastes are best skimmed of any grease (wih a grease trap) then fed over filters - which may need rejuvinating at some point, then through biological agents - like plants or reeds to remove metals, nitrates, etc, then out to grassland. I prefer this method rather than into sub surface waters.

Solid waste should  be recycled where possible or composted.

This question is a good example of how we need to protect the enviroment, as the numer one UK fan of this answers I feel my warnings are not always taken seriously but hear this my fellow answerarians ,soon Polar bears will start to migrate south and after eating all the Grizzlies they will be after you my salad dodging friends and they are fast lean and mean unlike the grizzlies who have developed into hairy versions of the indigent population,I do not wish to cause panic but I say THIS! hanging beef is not only a cruel way to kill a cow but why do they say if it is well hung it will taste better, HOW on earth can the size of the cows wedding tackle effect the taste of the meat, its time you woke up America and smelt the sausages!. Solar power incineration, solar powered fossil fuel-less electric turbo fan engines for aviation, Blimps with electric generating fans for high altitude electricity generation. Solar powered electric internal combustion steam engines for cars/transportation. Developement of a purely AC battery for transportation. Magnetic current directing electric jet engines. Distilling most waste for hydrogen/methane production.

what is really intriguing is now they are TRYING to make household sized units - tho i have NO idea if these work yet!! but its a great idea
