  1. The simple answer is arrogance.  When France was the dominant political power in the 17th and 18th centuries, people did things the French way.  When the US became a dominant political power in the 19th and 20th centuries, we thought that people would do things our way, but, as it turns out, everyone else, including the British, whose system we adopted, decided to go with the French system.

  2. Actually, the metric system is used in US but just not as the primary system.  Light bulbs are rated in Watts and Lumens.  Power is consumed by the watt-hour.  Sound pressure is measured in dB.  We buy some of our drinks by the liter.  Most consumables are offered in dual units.  Even our cars have dual units on the speedometers.  We just have our speed limits in miles per hour and we buy our gasoline by the gallon.  But, the UK still has speed limits in miles per hour as well.

  3. we use both in the uk, its great when measuring something to be able to choose which form to use. remember imperial is based on the 12 number system and decimal the ten, it makes it easier for kids to count in decimal, adding up is easier for them too aas they can do it on their fingers. perhaps the rumour over here is true and americans stuck with imperial because they have 12 fingers and toes.........

  4. Its not called standard its called the english system and it is tradition in America where as most of the world changed to the metric system

  5. because we in the US are troglodytes.  the metric system makes so much more sense, yet we refuse to use it.

  6. oh, maybe it was adolescent rebellion against the European authority when the US was a young country.
