  1. It also depends on where you're coming from. If you're in White Plains, Metro North. If you're in Babylon, LIRR.

Metro North appears to have more trains running into NYC, but the LIRR, IMO, has cleaner and more up to date equipment.

  2. The Long Island Rail Road was founded in the year 1835.

From a historical standpoint, the LIRR is the oldest running railroad which still has it's original name.

  3. metro north is much better for a rail fan more old stations, more signal towers, more bridges, some nice rock cuts and of course you start in grand central terminal which has a small transit museum. also you see a bigger variety of rolling stock Amtrak and some freight trains.

  4. Depends on what you consider as better.

  5. LIRR

  6. Metro-North. Overall service is better on Metro-North (though the LIRR runs trains later at night). Grand Central is a much better terminal than Penn Station. Metro-North is more spread out than the LIRR. The only advantage the LIRR has is that they have the new bilevel trains.
