Hi! I live in NYC and of course there are buses and subways.

But my questions is do I have to pay for the transfers from going on the train to riding on the bus?

For example.. I buy a 4 dollar metrocard. And I took the train, now I'm left with 2 dollars in my Metro. Afterthat I take the bus, is it a free transfer? Or I just used my other 2 dollar? Thank u

  1. Yes, it's free transfer if you did within two hours.

For example, let's see if you paid your fare on Bee-Line 45 in Bronx with MetroCard at Bartow Pell Mansion at 1:00pm, and if you transfer to (6) train at Pelham Bay Park, it's free transfer.

Then, at Westchester Sq, if you transfer to Bx40/Bx42, free transfer if it was within 2-hours.

For example, if you went to 86th St, 2-hour is past, but $2 deducted when you transfer to M86 bus, but still you get free transfer even with $0 value to another bus or subway.

Transfers are good up to two hours only.

  2. There are free Metrocard transfers for:

    Bus to subway

    Subway to bus

    Bus to bus

You get ONE free transfer per fare, if used within two hours.  So, if you get on a bus and swipe your card, you have two hours to board another bus or get on the subway and make a valid transfer.

You may make as many subway transfers as you want for free, as long as you don't leave a station; you don't have to swipe your Metrocard.  So, for example, you can take the 2 train to Times Square, transfer to the 7, take it to 5th Avenue, transfer to the F, all for one fare.  If you get on a bus within two hours of when you swiped your card at Times Square, you get a transfer.

Does this make sense?  If you need me to clear it up a bit, or if you have any other questions, let me know.

  3. it's a free transfer....

  4. it's a free transfer but it depends on how much time has gone by. i think it's something like 2 hours. although i'm not sure.
