Mets Carlos Beltran talks about staying in shape
If there’s one thing Carlos Beltran is working on, it’s his desire to get back in shape and fill his role as the New York Mets’ outfielder. The 33-year-old Puerto Rican is backing his nation up in the Caribbean Series 2011. He’s an alumnus in the series
and has been putting a lot of focus on his team’s antics on the field. The attention has been taken up by the round-robin at Isidoro Garcia Stadium, this year and the five time All Star player is getting his mind back to his health.
The player is in direct contention with fellow Puerto Rican, Angel Pagan, for the outfield position and his thoughts on the situation has been that of indifference. He’s not going to try too hard and he will be looking to recuperate at a timeline when it’s
very easy to do so. He wants to concentrate on staying healthy so that he can elevate his performance and provide a positive contribution to the team. If he manages to get back into shape, Beltran knows that the outfield position is secure. Beltran was able
to talk about his health and the situation prevailing at the moment. He was present at the Carlos Beltran Academy, this Sunday, and the 33-year-old had a lot to say during the tryouts, at the venue.
"I just want to get there in the best condition I can to help the team win ballgames. I know there has been a lot of discussion with centre field and right field and all that, but in my mind, I just want to focus on being healthy. I'm not concerned. If I'm
healthy and everything goes right ... that's not something I have any control of."
The only major disadvantage of giving up the position to Pagan would be to move to right field. Beltran, nevertheless, has a shot to prevent that if he stays healthy. He understands the importance to stay healthy and to keep his performance up. In the last
two years, Carlos has played just 145 games. Pagan however is a rising tide in the mix. He proved his worth to the management last season when he batted on a .290 average, smashed 11 home runs and stole 37 bases during the regular season.
"Whatever the manager thinks is best for the team he will do it and I would do it," Beltran said. "All of my career I have played centre field, and that's where I feel comfortable but at the same time, it's out of my hands."
That may be the case, but the pressure is definitely on Beltran who‘s been unlucky in the last two seasons.
