Metta World Peace ready to take a kick if Lakers fail to win the championship next season – NBA News
The Los Angeles Lakers are a basketball franchise that is obsessed with winning.
And they have 16 NBA championships to prove it.
The Lakers have been one of the most relevant teams in the NBA in the past 15 years, staying competitive season after season because their front office always manages to have a winning combination on the roster and does not postpone
team restructuring.
When the Lakers do not win, as it happened in the last two seasons, people can expect trades and roster changes. This off season was huge in that regard with Steve Nash and Dwight Howard joining the Hollywood franchise.
The acquisitions have made the Lakers title favourites for the next season and Metta World Peace says that if the Lakers do not win an NBA title next season, they can point the finger at him.
Speaking at the Voice Awards on Wednesday night, World Peace said:
"If we don't win, kick me in the L4 or L5 nerve. That's right below your buttocks. You ever been kicked hard in the buttocks? Kick me right there."
It is unsure whether World Peace is implying that he would be the person to blame if the Lakers were unable to win a championship next season. He is the weakest link in the starting lineup with Steve Nash, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant
and Pau Gasol being the other four.
World Peace made a similar promise when he joined the Lakers in 2009 for a five year contract worth $33 million. The Lakers had just won the 2009 NBA championship and World Peace had openly said that if the Lakers were unable to
repeat the performance in the next season, he would be the one to blame as he was the only roster change in the two seasons.
"They won last year, and I'm the new addition. The fans expect to repeat. Everybody in L.A. expects a second ring. And if we don't, then yeah, they should point it right at me, throwing tomatoes and everything,” World Peace had
said at the time.
Instead, World Peace scored 20 points in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics and helped the Lakers win their second NBA championship in two years.
The Lakers are the favourites to win the crown next year again, but it is not going to be as simple as it seems. Four All Star players who are the best at their given positions are going to be one difficult group to handle and
manage and Mike Brown will have his hands full come next season.
But if they fail in their quest, at least they know who to make the scapegoat. It is unclear if World Peace is trying to motivate himself by putting himself under pressure. It certainly worked the last time.
