Mexican City Guadalajara keen to organise the 2015 World Swimming Championships
A western Mexican City, Guadalajara has shown keen interest in organising the 2015 World Swimming Championships.
Guadalajara, who is also hosting the 2011 Pan American Games in October, has proposed the international sports governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) to be allowed to host the 2015 World Swimming Championships.
The news was confirmed by the management of the hemispheric sports competition’s official, who told the media about their future sports related concerns.
The chairman of the organising committee, Carlos Andrade said, “We want to be the host so we can take advantage of the infrastructure we’ll have for the Pan American Games.”
Carlos also stressed that they have used a lot of their resources to prepare the infrastructure of the Pan American Games. He said that the objective of the proposal is the maximum utilisation of the sports facilities installed. He explained that bringing
elite swimming events to the city will help them in generating revenue and will make a major contribution in promoting sports in the youth of the Guadalajara.
Carlos said that this will also prove fruitful for the Guadalajara Aquatic Centre, which might not be used after the Pan American Games but if the proposal is accepted then it would be able to host two major swimming events in four years.
In addition, the chairman to the National Sports Commission, Bernardo de la Garza also agreed with Carlos’s viewpoint and affirmed that this will enhance the level of sports in Mexico.
“The world championships will be a good opportunity to become more competitive in a sport that is growing,” de la Garza said.
Other strong contenders for the 2015 Swimming Championship include Canton, Hong Kong and Montreal. These cities are also interested in hosting the 2017 World Swimming Championships whereas the decision will be finalised by the FINA.
The FINA Committee is expected to decide the host for the 2015 Championships by a voting system among its members. In addition, the decision will take place on July 15, 2011 in Shanghai, while the 2011 World Championships are also taking place in Shanghai
from July 16 to 31.
