Mexican Erik Morales defends his WBC gold against surging undefeated Danny Garcia – Boxing news
Erik Morales, the current WBC light welterweight champion will defend his recently acquired gold against Danny Garcia, the incumbent NABO light welterweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will take place on March 24, 2012.
The bout will headline the pay-per-view put forth by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and the ring for the event will be stretched at Reliant Arena situated in Houston, Texas, United States.
The event will be televised on HBO’s Saturday night boxing show and will be co-headlined by the epic skirmish between Carlos Molina and James Kirkland.
Erik, 35, has a clear upper hand over the young surging pugilist Garcia. Morales, infamous as the ‘El Terrible’, has been in a total 59 bouts and came out victorious in 52. He has collected 36 of his total wins by knockout and is unanimously considered as
one of the best light welterweights in the world.
The Mexican Erik is also the last man on earth who was able to nail the Filipino Pac Man Manny Pacquiao. In addition, he also holds the unique honour of being the only Mexican in the history of the sport to wear four different world titles round his waist.
Moreover the orthodox stance Tijuana born Erik is recently coming from an authoritative win over undefeated Pablo Cesar Cano, the bout in which he grabbed the vacant WBC lightweight gold.
On the other hand, his opponent for the Saturday night extravaganza, Danny Garcia, is seriously outshined in various facets and just like Erik’s last bout opponent, Pablo, is undefeated. The American number three and world number six ranked light welterweight,
Garcia, has been in a total 22 bouts and came out victorious in all.
Danny has collected 14 of his wins by knockout. Also known as the ‘Swift’, Garcia recently fought Kendall Holt and collected a split decision victory and the vacant WBO intercontinental light welterweight gold as well.
Erik has a reach of 183cm as compared to Garcia’s 175. Moreover, Danny is overshadowed by the huge experience that Erik’s resume boasts. Furthermore, Danny has never stood against names such as Marcos Rene Maidana, Manny Pacquiao, Francisco Lorenzo, David
Diaz and others but Erik have brawled with the above huge names.
Despite all the odds against him, the 24-year-old Danny is optimistic and excited at getting a title shot. Garcia commented, “I don't care who has the belt. I don’t care who is in there that day. I’m just so excited to be fighting for the world championship.
This is my dream. They could switch my opponent at the last minute, and I wouldn’t care who it is. I’m going in there to kill.”
The skirmish will definitely be an epic one and Garcia only has his swift agility and footwork advantage at his disposal to counter the El Terrible’s terrible jabs.
