  1. Unfortunately, a lot of people love to satanize Porfirio Díaz thanks to the wonderful mexican history edicateon written and hand-approved by the PRI party to teach mexicans half truths to make them feel happy about themselves.

Most mexicans don't realize the revolution was really a very, very, very bad thing that screwed up the country to it's present state.

And most mexicans still think Emilio Zapata was a penniless indian because if you're an indian, you must have been raised in poverty. Zapata's family owned an hacienda; he was indian allright, but indeed a very well-off one.

But yes, Porfirio Diaz stayed in power too long by altering the constitution to allow endless reelection. He eventually fled the country and died in luxury in France a few years later. Curiously he was the last president of indian blood. He could even speak fluent Mixteco and a lot of things he did as president helped improve the lives of the indians (quite a spin from the eeeeeeeeeeeevil almost white villain mexican history likes to portray him as).

He wanted to bring Mexico to modenrity by stabilizing the society and build trains and built factories everywhere to give jobs to indians but that they'd still live in their land.

The revolution ended all that and the indians murdered in amazingly violent ways (like Sin City is like Barney the dinosaur violent) to the ejidatarios or landlords. The remaining white mexicans fled the provinica and lived barricated in Mexico City which helps explain why it's so overpopulated when most of the country is underpopulated.

It's a complex tale, but an interesting read if you read with an open mind.

  2. The abuse of the new governers.

  3. Basically, as the post before says, it was a revolt against the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz.

Keep in mind though, that before Porfirio, there had practically been NO period of any kind of stability since independence from Spain (in 1821). In some ways, Porfirio Diaz's 30 year reign was a welcome thing.

Unfortunately, during this period of stability, much injustice was brought about, it was a missed opportunity I think. However it is also a mistake to say that Porfirio Diaz's 30 years in power were a total waste.

The power wars brought about by the revolution didn't settle until the 1920s, afterwhich followed another 70 year "dictatorship" under PRI rule.

  4. THE CAUSE

The Mexican Revolution was brought on by, among other factors, tremendous disagreement among the Mexican people over the dictatorship of President Porfirio Díaz , who, all told, stayed in office for thirty one years. During that span, power was concentrated in the hands of a select few; the people had no power to express their opinions or select their public officials. Wealth was likewise concentrated in the hands of the few, and injustice was everywhere, in the cities and the countryside alike.
