Mexican Roberto Garcia collects unanimous win over American Antwone Smith – Boxing news
ESPN’s weekly Friday night show ‘Friday night Fights’ witnessed an impressive 10-round non-title skirmish in which the Mexican Roberto Garcia nailed his American opponent Antwone Smith convincingly after collecting a unanimous decision in his favour.
The bout headlined the event promoted by Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing and the ring for the event was stretched at Convention Center situated in Pharr, Texas, United States. The event was televised live on March 23, 2012 from ESPN2 and was co-headlined
by the eight-round non-title skirmish between Tyrone Brunson and James De la Rosa.
Roberto clearly had the odds in his favour from the very beginning since the ring was perfectly setup while keeping in mind Garcia’s needs and was dubbed later on as the second shortest ring ever stretched in the sport’s history.
The 31-year-old Robert was entering in his career’s 35th bout. The veteran has collected 30 wins in his long career and a whopping 21 of them by knockout. He has lost just three brawls in his entire career.
The former number one WBC International light middleweight title contender, Roberto, was on a two-bout win streak and received his career’s third loss from the jabs of Antonio Margarito.
After the unsuccessful attempt Garcia, also known as ‘La Amenaza’, fought against Jose Flores and Calvin Odom and easily collected unanimous decision wins over both men. Antwone, on the other hand, was seriously outclassed by Garcia’s experience and had
just one aspect in his favour, height.
Smith has been in a total 25 bouts and came out victorious in 21. He has collected just 12 wins by knockout and was coming from a unanimous decision win over rookie Yoryi Estrella. Another important factor that was considered by most analysts was Smith’s
inconsistent performance.
Smith, also known as ‘The Truth’, lost two of his last five bouts and against men who were slightly more experienced than him. It is this reason why most critics reiterated that the American Smith will face a tough time in nailing Roberto and might even
lose the battle if does not throws his jabs well.
The 10-round skirmish kicked off and Roberto took ample advantage of moving in charging from below targeting Antwone’s chin. Smith remained on the back foot the whole bout and was manhandled by Roberto along the ring ropes brutally.
Garcia from the second or third round onwards perfectly timed his jabs and kept on infiltrating Smith’s defence whenever he loosened it. As a result of perfect timing and agile footwork, Roberto successfully collected 92-98, 93-97, and 93-97 from the three
designated judges.
The Mexican Roberto now has 31 wins in his account out of a total 35 and Smith has collected his career’s fourth defeat out of a total 26.
