Mexican ladies retain the 2012 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tournament Title – Volleyball news
The outstanding Mexican players Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia pulled off success in the finals of 2012 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit Tournament on Sunday.
The Grand Cayman Island played host to the first event of NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit from March 23-25. The final showdown of the tournament was an all-Mexican affair, which brought Candelas and Garcia in competition with compatriots Martha Revuelta
and Vanessa Virgen. The former duo posted 2-0 (21-6, 21-19) on board and got hold of the title trophy.
Candelas and Garcia were tagged as Mexico-2 and they opened the match on a very good note. Both players perfectly complimented each other and promptly built pressure on the opposite side. The climate was hot as the sun stood high in the sky. However, the
amazing Mex-2 players did not show any sign of desperation and played with a great passion. They directed their hits into the gaps and raised the score by leaps and bounds.
In addition to their strong offense, they also influenced the opponents with flawless defence. The duo of Revuelta and Virgen were unable to poke the ball over the net. Every time they attempted a cross-court shot, Candelas would throw her hands up in the
air and would offer a solid block. As a result, the Mexico-1 players were restricted to a very low score in the first frame. They suffered the loss of opening set after scoring only six points, while the Mex-2 team achieved the set points (21-6).
After dropping the opening set, Revuelta/ Virgen put up huge resistance in second set in order to save the match. They hit back aggressively and came up with better attacks. With nice combination of attack and defence tactics, Mexico-1 managed to bring a
little stability in the second set but it was not enough as Gracia and Candelas were determined to put an end to the game in second set. Mex-2 changed the attack strategy and hit from different angles.
Once again, the duo was back in business and took the control of operations. Mexico-1 struggled to catch up with the opponents but lost second set with narrow gap of two points. Team of Gracia and Candelas posted 21-19 in the second set and settled for gold
medal victory.
Garcia was overwhelmed with their great win and expressed her emotions after the match.
She said, “The heat and sun were intense but we made a good job. We´ve been training for the Olympic qualifier, and now we’ll be headed to Brazil and China for the Swatch FIVB World Tour.”
Likewise, her team partner Candelas added, “The year is beginning great, this will motivate us to work even harder and it was wonderful that Mexico made it to the finals with both teams.”
