Question:

Mexican "Rice Water"??

I went to a mexican resteraunt in Chicago with my brother a year or so ago...and I had an amazing drink. It was really wonderful. I've wanted it ever since but I'm not sure where to get it...or even how to make it.

I was watching television today and saw someone making "Horchata" and was wondering if it was the same. If so, does anyone have a tried and true good recipe for it?

Please, this would be very helpful.

  1. Horchata is what you're looking for.  You can usually find mixes available.  It might take some trial and error till you find one you like, but the mixes are a LOT easier than making it from scratch!

  2. Yes. Horchata is Rice Water. Its super easy to make and delicious. Here is my family's recipe for Horchata:

    2 C. Rice

    5-6 Cinnamon Sticks (canela)

    2 Cans Condensed Milk

    Water

    1/4 C. Sugar

In a bowl, add rice, cinnamon sticks and enough water to cover. Let sit for about an hour or two for the rice & cinnamon to soften and the flavors to mix.  Blend Well. Pour through a FINE sieve or colander into a pitcher (the colander/sieve has to be fine or else the drink will be gritty).  Add condensed milk  and enough water to fill the pitcher (about 2qts.) Add sugar to taste (about 1/4 cup). Stir Well and serve chilled over ice. ENJOY!

  3. 1 cup white rice, uncooked

    2 quarts water

    1 cinnamon stick

    sugar, to taste

Mix all together ingredients and let stand 3 hours.

    Simmer for 1/2 hour.

Let cool, then puree in a blender and strain through a cloth or fine-mesh strainer.

Taste for sweetness and add sugar if necessary.

    Chill and serve over ice.

Horchata and Agua de Arroz are the same thing.

    I hope this was helpful,Take Care!!!  :)
