Mexican women pave their way to the semis of 2012 NORCEC Beach Volleyball Tournament
The first event of the 2012 NORCEC Beach Volleyball Circuit is underway in Grand Cayman Island from March 23-25.
In the women’s tournament, a total of 15 duos joined the beach volleyball scrimmage. Mexico had two pairs, which played under the tags of Mex-1 and Mex-2. Both Mexican teams demonstrated stellar performances in their respective matches and booked slots in
the semi-finals of the tournament.
Mexico-1 consisted of Martha Revuelta and Vanessa Virgen, while Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia represented Mexico-2. Most recently, the two pairs showcased their amazing digging and diving skills in the quarter-final matches on Saturday.
In the first fixture on Saturday, Martha Revuelta and Vanessa Virgen of Mexico-1 took on Diana Romero and Marcela Avalos of El Salvador. The former dominated the scene with strong offence and solid defence. The ESA team was restricted to low scores of 9
and 11 in the two sets, while Mexican took away the game. They finished the first match with 2-0 (21-9, 21-11).
Equally, talented Mexico-2 team bagged first match victory against Canadian ladies. The team of Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia developed a great chemistry between them and did not allow the opponents pose any threat on them.
The Canada-2’s Jamie Broder and Victoria Altomare trailed behind and eventually acknowledged the better status of Mexicans. The scoreboard showed the final figures of 21-18, 21-16, while Mexican team was tagged as winner of the competition.
After winning the opening matches on second day of the tournament, both Mexican teams advanced to the Main-Draw of the tournament. The first match of Main-Draw was an all-Mexican affair as one side of the court was captured by Martha Revuelta and Vanessa
Virgen, while Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia took their positions on the other side of the net. The cracking fight between Mexican ladies finally ended with Mexico-2’s victory as they posted 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) and advanced to the semi-finals.
Following the loss, the Mexico-1 was forced to play another match in order to qualify for the semis. They took on Michelle Moriarty and Traci Weamer of USA and claimed match victory by posting 2-0 (21-17, 25-23). Success in the second match allowed Mexico-1
to book a slot in the semi-finals.
In the other semi-final matches, American duo of Jennifer Snyder and Heather Hughes performed an up to mark performance and reserved semi-final berth. They defeated teams from Puerto Rico and Canada.
Semi-finals are scheduled to be held on Sunday, where Mexico-1 will take on Puerto Rico and Mexico-2 will go against USA-1. The winners of the semi-finals will go into the finals, while losing teams will compete for third position in the classification match.
The Mexican pairs are tipped to have another meeting in the final match.
