Mexico City Music?

Question

Can you give me a website or tell me about the music of Mexico City? I need the present view and the history as well as some suggestions for someone who is traveling there to experience the music of Mexico City. Thanks.

Hello. The answer to this question is too big; but, beeing a mexican NOT from Mexico city, let me tell you that the music there is, ACTUALLY, very different to the northern music (we call it "música chilanga"), although they hear almost any kind of music, they do prefer some "tropical" sounds, like "salsa", "cumbia", "ballenato", and stuffs like that. Try a search about "Sonora Santanera", "Sonora Dinamita", "Sonora Matancera", "Cañaveral" maybe on youtube, so you can see and hear. That is music very "chilanga" (from México city); we can hear that in northern´states (from Quéretaro state to the north we are different culturally speaking), but it is not as popular as it is in México city, we prefer music artists like "Intocable", "Valentin Elizalde" (RIP), "Pepe Aguilar", "Cardenales de Nuevo León", and others. Try a search on YouTube to see the differences.

Music from mexico city?...well if you want to say something like an anthemn...usually they use the Huapango de Moncayo, that you can hear on you tube, i guess that is what you are looking for.

And about mexico city groups, you can look for Cafe Tacuba, that is really cool...la Maldita Vecindad...or whatever of ska, like Panteon Rococó, Natalia Lafourcade, something of cumbia like La sonora Margarita, or more traditional like the

Sonora Santanera...

It is really difficult because Mexico city is means diversity and is the meeting point of all people who want to be succes and well known in Mexico...so there are artists  from all the country living there and people who will hear everything.

Well, there's a lot of music in mexico city. You can find the classic regional type like mariachis, you can find the banda(not everyone listens to that but it's there), you can find like rock, pop, hip hop... anything like any other country =)
