VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Mexicans forced into makeshift shelters by massive flooding are threatened by ailments ranging from colds to cholera, health officials said on Wednesday.

About 80,000 people from the flooded city of Villahermosa have taken refuge in crammed schools, churches and a multistory parking garage.

  3. The Sherie size of the disaster is sure to be a strain on the Mexican government certainly. What I find interesting is that ALL the reports I have seen comparing this to the US response to Katrina stressed how much better the Mexican government has handled this disaster. Water, medical supplies, personnel, were in place 2 days BEFORE the floods so they were there to provide emergency help from the first hour. The reporters I read who had covered both said the difference was night and day. Katrina victims sometimes got no help for 4 or 5 days in the US, whereas in Mexico they were getting some relief within 24 hrs. Kind of embarrassing!
