ATM is the best way to go. You get the best exchange rate from your bank.

Take some traveller's cheques in case of emergency.

I would confirm to be safe. Most places there are run well. I stayed at Porto Real in Playa Del Carmen and it was perfect.Everyone speaks English at most resorts.

Do take some water shoes as there are alot of rocks in the water. Some shorts, swimsuit, sunscreen and you are set!

Definitely travellers cheques are best and the most secure and yes you definitely should confirm everything before you leave home for the airport.

The Mayan Riviera is an awesome place to stay while visiting, was there 4 years ago...top notch service....
