Is it safe to take the metro and tren ligero at 10:00 pm at night in Mexico city?

I'm going to be on vacation and i'm going to go to the America vs Toluca match, the best way to the stadium is the metro and light train but the game will end at night..will it be safe to go on the metro at that time?

  1. If anything, you may get your pocket picked.  Especially if you look like a tourist.  The trains are narrow and crowded.

I got mine picked in Aca and these guys were well dressed and very fast  and very professional.  The guy in front of me bent forward and pushed his butt in my crotch and moved around while the guy behind lifted my wallet.  In the five seconds it to do this, I realized what had happened and reached for my wallet. I didn't know for sure who it was so I uttered a few choice words and got off the bus.

There were, I say were  because I heard these guys were apprehended a few kids here in Acapulco that got three people I know.  The mix a concoction of mustard and chocolate and spray it on people and point up to make you think a bird dumped on you and while helping to clean you they lift your wallet.  In the case of my friend "Bernie" he became suspicious and checked for his wallet and it was still there.  He went to pay a bill a while later a all the cash a one credit were removed.

This happened once in the twenty five years I have been coming here and I only lost $200.00 pesos $18usd

If you don't carry too much you cant lose too much is my motto

  2. No, it's not safe...as a matter of fact even in the day light you need to keep your eyes open.

  3. As any other major city extra precautions must be taken when traveling in such means of transportation. It's better if you take a taxi, expensive? Yes Safer? Also yes

  4. It is actually not a matter of the time. Since you are going to the game, chances are that the tren ligero and the metro will be crowded and at night, the chances of getting mugged are stronger when the people are scarce. Dress inconspicuously, avoid carrying a camera or if you do, take it in a small bag. Don't carry your wallet in the back pocket, if possible leave it at your hotel together with your documents. The front desk people will be happy to place it in a secure place or maybe your room has a safe box embedded. As "gringo" above said, the less you carry the less you'll lose and if you don't act like a distracted tourist you'll not even lose a thing.

One thing, though: Why the America game??  they are the worst right now !!

Another: Taxis can be way out more dangerous. If you decide to take one, check that the license plate number starts with an L or with an S. Don't ever climb on one that has 3 numbers before 3 letters. They are unauthorized but "tolerated" and anyone can drive them, specially criminals.
