  1. Be careful about drinking the water, and keep a close eye on your belongings. Lock up everything of real significant value (passports, birth certificates) in a hotel safe. It is not unheard of for things to go missing from your room. Just use common sense, mostly. Mexican people are very friendly but if you get a bad vibe, get out. Stay in the tourist areas. Mexicans are a very proud people, so try not to talk down to them or argue with them because they will retaliate and they are not afraid to fight, if provoked. Enjoy yourself and have fun!!! Remember to tip the people who have helped you because they really appreciate that. If you're buying anything from a beach vendor remember to NEGOTIATE! usually you can slash his offering price in half and start talking from there.

  2. Don't drink the water.

  3. WATER IS SAFE IN MEXICO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. The most dangerous places are the border towns (Tijuana, Juarez and Nuevo Laredo) because of the drug cartels.

Tourist towns are a little dangerous because they attract pickpockets and con-men.  Violent crime in these towns is almost nonexistant.  You are much more likely to be beaten for your wallet in Washington, DC than Mexico DF.  But crimes of opportunity are more common.  If you leave a camera slung over the back of a chair in a restaurant, it may disappear quickly.  If you leave something visable in a car, it may be gone when you get back.

When I travel in tourist areas, I wear a money belt under my clothes with the majority of my money, passports and credit cards.  I carry my wallet in a front pants pocket with a little bit of money.  But I've been to Mexico about 24 times and never had my pocket picked, but I did loose a baseball cap that I left visable in the car.

The people of Mexico are for the most part wonderful people.  You can really see this if you go to the towns where few tourists go--plus rooms and food are cheaper.
