Mexico earns fifth place in the Men´s NORCECA Championship - Volleyball
A match between Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago took place in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, on September 3rd as part of the competition was part of the Men’s NORCECA Championship. Both teams were competing for the fifth place in the tournament. After
the day had reached its close, Mexico had made a clean sweep over their opponents and secured their spot.
Despite the fact that Trinidad and Tobago tried hard to overcome the Mexicans, they could not challenge their opponents significantly. The first set of the match started off tough but ended with the Mexicans clinching the frame easily. The second set was
completely dominated by the Mexicans as they gave no room for Trinidad and Tobago to manoeuvre. Trinidad and Tobago stepped up their game in the third set but the effort came in too late and was not enough to stop the Mexicans from securing what became the
final set of the match at: 25-20, 25-12 and 25-21.
The coach of the Mexican team, Jorge Azair, made this statement after his team had won the match: “We learned from yesterday’s mistakes and we were more concentrated today, that was the key of today’s win”
On the other hand, the coach of Trinidad and Tobago expressed himself in the following words at the press conference that was conducted after the match: “Mexico has proven in the last 5 years that they have superiority, we must go on forward and seek to
be better.”
The first set of the match started off with both the teams battling hard to gain control of the court. The horns of the Mexicans remained locked with that of Trinidad and Tobago for a considerable time but as the frame progressed. The Mexicans were seen
emerging with the lead. Once they were out in front, they did not have a hard time keeping the advantage and finally won the first set of the game at 25-20.
The loss of the opening set dampened the spirits of Trinidad and Tobago significantly as they could not perform up to the mark and let the Mexicans take an early advantage in the second set. As the Mexicans were able to increase the gap, Trinidad and Tobago
let the match slip out of their hands towards a Mexican victory at 25-12.
The start of the third set of the game got the Trinidad and Tobago team fighting for a chance in the match but the Mexicans did not take long to assert their dominance and seal the deal at 25-21.
The player that was able to become top scorer on both sides was the Mexican Gerardo Contreras as he posted a total of 12 points in the entire match. Whereas the sce on the Trinidad and Tobago side was Tomas Aguilera who registered 11 points in all.
