Mexico earns first win in the pool-play of 2012 Men’s Pan Am Cup – Volleyball News
Mexico launched power over Venezuela in the last pool-play match of Men’s Pan American Cup on Wednesday, while playing at the Reicardo Arias sports hall in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The competition was tough, but Mexico managed to fight the challenge and ended with 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23) victory. It proved to be a failing effort for Venezuela to break the ice in first round, whereas Mexico successfully came out of the blues.
Top gun of Venezuela, Kervin Piñerua, fought bravely and staged an eye-catching action on the net. He was named the top-scorer of the match with 21 points, but he ended on the losing side. On the other hand, Mexico relied on Daniel Vargas and Pedro Rangel.
Both of them worked out an amazing feat and added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The match started out slow and the players on both sides took some time to settle down in their positions. Gradually, Mexican Pedro paced things with powerful serves. He was joined Leonardo as well. The libero of Venezuela faced difficulty in tackling the
swinging serves from the opposite side of the court. Nonetheless, Kervin of Venezuela counter-attacked and helped his side with consecutive points. The back ‘n’ forth action of volleyball ended in 25 minutes and Mexico earned four-point advantage to claim
the opening stanza, 25-21.
The second set progressed in the similar fashion. Mexico played with the confidence of first-set win, while Venezuela struggled to cover up the deficit. Set-2 of the match ended with identical score of 25-21 and Mexico extended its lead to 2-0.
Venezuela was deep down in trouble after the loss of two sets in a row. Venezuelan team played to its potential and tried to save the match points. However, the charged-up Mexicans denied all their efforts and cruised past to 25-23 win that led the team
to a straight-sets victory.
“Things went to our favor and we had a good game. Above all other things was that we entered well focused. We knew Venezuela had many youngsters ready to give their best and we respect them. We played better against them than we did against United States
and Brazil,” said Pedro Rangel, the captain of Mexico.
Likewise, South American skipper Kervin Piñerua had his say about the match. He stated: "this competition has been negative for our team. We couldn’t find the level of play we have and that we were working. We need more confidence and we only can continue
working for the upcoming competitions.”
