  1. Hi Bob!

For most of the year in the Gulf, there are two seasons: rainy and dry.  The rainy season corresponds with northern summer and early autumn, roughly the hurricane season.  The dry season lasts through winter and early spring, when there may be infrequent showers, but mostly the climate is dry.

  2. It depends where you want to put your "imaginary" island. If you put it in front of the US Gulf Coast, summers will be hot and winters quite cool. This counts for the area around 30 degree latitute. There you may experience already almost all four seasons, but with mild winters.

As you want to put your island in the middle of the Gulf, it will experience a maritime climate which is influenced very much by the temperature of the ocean. But winter cold fronts will occasionally hit it and bring temperatures remarkably down. Summers will be hot and humid with thunderstorms every afternoon.

If you put your island into the southern part of the Gulf, tropical climate will affect it all year long, just like in Cancun, Mexico, or in Cuba.

Nevertheless, hurricane season is from June 1st until Nov. 30th, meaning, no matter where you put your island in the Gulf of Mexico, at that time a major hurricane can strike it at anytime. Especially the Gulf of Mexico, since it is nearly landlocked from the Atlantic Ocean, raises its surface temperature much higher during the summer, which knowingly fuels monster hurricanes once they make it through the Strait of Florida or out of the Caribbean Sea. Just think about what happened in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit the US Gulf Coast..

    Good luck with your project!!
