Mexico makes a record win on the second day at IPC Parapan Games – Paralympics News
The fourth edition of the Parapan American Games hosted the Swimming Competition involving 180 swimmers from 14 countries competing in a total of 85 medal events in seven days of swimming.
The second day of the swimming competition took place in Guadalajara, Mexico on Monday the 14th of November 2011 and was played in front of a cheering crowd that boosted the morale of the competitors.
Leading the Swimming Medals Table with twenty two medals was Mexico and the Mexican swimmers did not waste much time adding to the seven medals they had accomplished on Sunday. With an impressive performance on Monday they took
the gold and bronze in the first race and out of the 22 medals that they had bagged; 7 were gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Following a temporary halt after bagging the first two games it felt like an eternity without a gold medal. However, Mexico was soon on top of the plinth in the men’s 50 meter Freestyle S4, Gustavo Sanchez (40.29) took the gold
and teammate Juan Reyes (45.87) made a sensational record swim and took the silver.
It was finally time for Mexico’s Luis Andrade Guillen (29.74) to make a statement as he stood at the top of the podium in the men’s 50 meter Freestyle S8, after claiming two silver medals. The race was a close finish with Brazil’s
William Santana (30.05), who eventually took silver and Canada’s Christopher Sergeant-Tsonos (30.75) who managed to pull off the bronze medal.
Mean while, in the women’s department, Sanchez Partricia Valle (1:01.06) and Haidee Aceves Perez (1:11.43) held Mexico’s second uninterrupted first, second finish in the women’s 50 meter Freestyle S3, in record time. However, the
Bronze was won by Columbia’s Paula Lara Rodriguez (1:12.64).
The closing race of the day was between the Mexican Vianney Trejo (3:49.73), who had secured Mexico’s first gold yesterday, with USA’s Reilly Boyt (3:40.34) and teammate Karina Domingo Bello (3:42.59). Nonetheless, Trejo skilfully
managed to claim her country’s concluding medal on Monday with a golden swim in the women’s 200 meter Individual Medley SM6(IM).
When all was said and done the host nation boasted 22 swimming medals after a breathtaking second day at Scotiabank Aquatics Centre in Mexico.
