I was planning on going to Mexico...but now that the Canadian girl who is in jail there is trying to get out...I've heard that things are getting crazy and people should not be going there.

Is this true?

  1. well I was for 2  months here and nothing happens lots of  fun  and good weather so if you are  out of trouble  you dont have any problem, just avoid places  like Tepito (not safe here) Garibaldi dangerous when is too late, Iztapalapa all the county) and  if you drive don´t drink in the weekend  because exist a program  that check the alcohol  levels and for sure you going direct to the jail if you drive with  high level  in the main square exist police that speak English in case of help they can help  and in  many places right now is safety cameras that check many places direct to  the police and like in the big cities exist good ones and bad ones  so maybe is your good luck or bad one...like the september 11 if you are in the wrong place not matter how safety place can be I read the news a few days a go and I read that one guy inside of him´s bedroom get a shot  from outside ...so enjoy the life  and don´t think in the bad things!!

  2. I agree with Frank Mint.  I won't be going back to Mexico again (and used to go every year) until they clean up the corruption and drugs.  What happened to the Canadian lady could happen to anyone.  The rule of law is: you are guilty until proven innocent and your government really can't do anything to help you.  You don't even have to have done anything.  You might just be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  I've been exposed to the attitude there and it's scary, especially if you don't speak the language.  Go somewhere that you know the language and the law.

  3. pick a town.  I live near washington dc.  More murder reported here than any place I've lived.  My daughter just got back from Mexico.  I consider Mexico one of the safer places in the world right now.

  4. The police and government officials are pretty corrupt.  We were traveling across Mexico doing a groundwater study so small towns and cities could manage their water supply better.  We were doing all this for free to help the farmers and small towns but in over half of the places we went to, we were harassed by the police and local governments that wanted to get money out of us and one time we were held at gunpoint and another time we were thrown in jail.  A lot of our equipment was stolen from us by the police and local officials.

True that crime rates in a lot of American cities are bad but you compare it to the per capita rates in Mexico, it is a very dangerous place with absolutely no rule of law.

  5. Do you know how many Canadians visit there?  Many, Many Many Canadians go there on visits.  Thats only one story, which is unfortunate for her.   As with every country, you gotta stay away from the dangerous spots.

  6. I live here in Mexico City for 2 yrs now. Everywhere I go many policemen in their big bikes, patrol car and per avenue , there are also police stations. Lots of bars and restaurants were shut down by the government for suspicision of illegal activities like selling of narcotic drugs. I am talking about Mexico City or Mexico Distrito Federal. I have been through a lot of places here and I do believe that if you stay away from states that are close to any US borders , you will be fine.

My boyfriend is also a Canadian. He comes visit me every 3 months. It is very sad what happen to Ms. Martin who is still in jail and is in the poorest health condition. I will be praying for her release and for her safety.

  7. I have spent lots of time in Yucatan, Q Roo and Campeche without any problems. The people are always friendly and willing to help. We check out parts of town where the gringo tourist avoids due to language barriers. We don't speak Spanish very well but find a way to get by. If you are afraid, there is no reason to experience something new but it will be your loss. The food, cenotes and charm await you.

  8. I've traveled to Mexico a lot, and not just to the safe cities, either.  Tourists, in my experience, rarely have trouble.  Most of the violence is between gangs and the police, and if you stay out of the way just like everyone else then you won't have any problems.  I was in a city for a week in northern Mexico where the police station had been hosed down with machine gun fire the day before I got there, but I never had any problems.  If you see something happen, just get out of there as fast as you can.

I've also never had any problems with Mexican police, they have always been helpful and friendly to me.  Just be smart and don't act like an idiot.  If you get drunk and crash a car, you're going to jail...just like in the U.S.  Act intelligent and respectful of their country, and you won't have any trouble.
