Is it better to raise a family outside of Chicago or outside of Acapulco? I need to provide offspring with time and choices and a value-filled foundation. Since both parents have to work merely exist in USA (and sitch worsening) there's hardly any time to spend with child. I'm at wits end; thoughts? THANK YOU!!

  1. it depends where in mexico and where in the us, the center and south of mexico are safe areas, i lived there, many americans live in places like cuernavaca, guanajuato, queretaro, even mexico city, oaxaca, chiapas, are very friendly with the foreigners, not only tourist, but people that lives there. mexico is a good place because drugs are not everywhere like in the US, true, a lot of drugs run trough mexico, but is not very comon to use them, not like in the us, the good thing about having a family in the US, there are better schools, and job  opportunities are there. it all boils down to where in mexico and where in the us

  2. Today's news paper had three Associated Press stories about Mexico. Nine high level police officers have been recently murdered by the drug cartels. The latest was yesterday.

Drug Cartels are openly hanging banners in the streets recruiting their own militias.

Rape and Robbery of tourist on the west coast of Mexico has gotten so bad the US State Dept. is advising tourist not to go there. Travel Agencies have stopped sending tours because of the Rapes and Robberies.

I think you should try to stay in the US and wait for things to stabilize in Mexico before you move there.

  3. Rob has a lot of good points to consider. The education down here is pretty bad at best. Even the private schools cant hold a match to a American public school. Homeschooling yourself here in Mexico would be the better option but are you ready for that.

Kidnapping I think is your least concern. The standard " crime " is just petty snatch and grab or at worse ' hand it over " type of stuff. The poverty you will experience here will make all a better person and greatful for what they have thats for sure. I think the kids will grow tired of it real fast unless they are very young now and havent really experienced the American "wealth".

I think the education of your kids is the biggest decision in all this and personally I would educate them in the US at least until the 8th or 9th grade. Then that poverty issue will creep in at that stage in thier life should you decide to come south of the border.

I will tell you this - everything in your life will change, everything !  The streets are filled with trash , water is intermitant at best , driving is beyond insane , corruption is a way of life .

If you need more specifics just e mail me , glad to help you any way I can.

  4. You really had better have your finances in place before heading down to Mexico! What will be your situation? If one of you (the parents) is being given the opportunity to go there on an Expat package then by all means go! Your kids really would benefit from mixing in a different culture and your money would go much farther. However, if you are planning on going there and finding jobs, you probably have another thing coming! First off, getting a work permit is almost impossible unless a company is sponsoring you, and secondly the pay would then be on the local pay scale, and you would definitely struggle. If my company offered me a chance to go down to Mexico for a few years I would jump at it. Of course a typical Expat package includes stipends for international schools for kids, rent and living allowances, and then your regular pay. It can be a sweet deal to move out of your comfort zone.

  5. What about kidnapping?

You have a greater chance of being hit by lightning than to be kidnapped in Mexico.  Kidnappers target wealthy Mexican families.  The kidnappers do their research and the know how much is in their target's bank accounts and how much of what stock the family can sell to pay the ransom.

So your very safe if you're not wealthy.
